THE PERSON OF THE WEEK, #1: MARSHALL WALKER LEE
Marshall Walker Lee is 6’1. I think he is one of my most handsome friends. I’m pretty sure I saw him waiting in Powells for an interview once in 2008, but that was before I met him. Then when I met him I remember that I saw that same guy in Powells. I met him at the same time as I met Drew Swenhaugen. One of the first times I hung out with him was at Roadside Attraction with Drew, Joseph Mains, and Emily Kendal Frey. In the first few weeks of knowing him, in my head, and sometimes out loud, I would accidentally call him “Drew,” and I kept calling Drew, “Marshall.” It was all very embarrassing. It made me feel like a bad listener and a bad new friend. A few years ago, he walked pretty much from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Coast Trail. It took a few months. He was gone all summer. I remember he got pretty sick at one point. I remember all summer, every other day or two or so, I would think about where Marshall was, how it’s like a week or a month or two later, and how he’s still walking somewhere. It gave my understanding of time a kind of weight. It was one feat of human endurance of one of my friend’s that I like to tell other friends of mine about, as if I had anything to do with it, as if I should be proud to have a friend who could do something amazing like that. Here are some other things he’s done since I’ve known him: he has delivered cakes, I think, for a baker, he has worked for Powell’s (he got that job!), he co-edited and co-founded Poor Claudia with Drew, he worked in a food cart that made grilled cheeses, I think, and he was an actor and model. He was in this movie. His great grandfather, Robert Adair Walker, was the poet laureate of Kansas. He is lactose intolerant. He can’t hold his breath for very long, as far as I’m concerned. We have spent many of our Sunday nights together on the same Pub Quiz team at The Basement. A lot of time we get second or third, or we don’t place at all, but two or three times we’ve won. He is moving to Austin, TX, with Lindsey Stern, who is a very talented painter. He is moving today, in fact. This is a big move for him, and a big loss for PDX. He will be missed, so this is why, in part, Marshall Walker Lee is this week’s Person of The Week.
