Manual Cinema, the cinematic shadow puppetry company from Chicago who performed Fjords this spring, is now presenting their newest and most technically-sophisticated feature-length work to date: Lula del Ray, in a limited engagement at the Den Theater in Chicago’s Wicker Park from November 29th to December 16th. If you live in Chicago, please go and please tell them I miss them.
I’m making a little film about the Fjords tour with Manual Cinema and I have a lot of outtakes. Here’s a little something that won’t make it in, but it is a reminder of pure joy from a few months ago. Here’s the recipe: Janaka Stucky, my van, Will Oldham, a dirty sock, a book, late March sun, and Mississippi back roads.
Read Jenny Zhang’s latest piece in Rookie called Outsider/Insider. She brings up her trip with Manual Cinema and me. So good. It makes me want to never stop driving that Econoline along the edge of everyone else’s world.
If you didn’t get enough of my Fjords tour photos on this blog, the Julia Miller, of Manual Cinema fame, has been cooking up her own Fjords tour photos over on her blog. And if you can’t get enough of that, I’m cooking up a tiny little Fjords tour documentary. So, hold tight. Hold tight.

40 plays
Tonight, Manual Cinema and I will be on the Lower East Side at the Poetry Project at St. Marks. I feel like this.
Manual Cinema and I have landed in NYC and we’ll be camping out here for the week. Come see Fjords tonight at The Tank, or at Labrynth Books in Princeton tomorrow, or at the WRtRLtWRtW series Thursday night, or at the Poetry Project at St. Marks Church Friday night. Ok? Ok. Now I’m going to take a quick nap.
Fjords made Weekender on WBEZ! Alison Cuddy just told everybody about FJORDS on Chicago Public Radio. There’s a podcast of it if you want to listen in.
Good news for those who have yet to purchase Fjrods tickets. The Poetry Foundation will open two additional matinees: Saturday at 2pm and Sunday at 2pm. Buy them here before they sell out.
Fjords Tour! We’re taking the show on the road. Here is the tour poster (designed by Denny Schmickle) with all the dates (subject to change). For details which will be constantly updated, go here.
The Fjords shows at the Poetry Foundation in Chicago are now all sold out, though I’m told there may be a few tickets at the door each night. And we’re working on having a fifth encore show somewhere on Monday night. Stay tuned.
This is the cd of music written for the shadow play, FJORDS. The music is written by Kyle Vegter of Manual Cinema, and performed by the Chicago Q Ensemble. The cd packaging is designed by Denny Schmickle. If you purchased the hard-cover edition of Fjords, this cd will come along. It’ll also be available at the performance itself, and afterward.
This is the trailer for the Manual Cinema and Chicago Q Ensemble performance of Fjords that will take place at the Poetry Foundation February 23-26. A version of this performance will also happen Friday night during the AWP conference.
Another Fjords peek.
I’m hosting (for Octopus Books) and reading (for Black Ocean) on Friday night during the AWP conference at The Hideout. Black Ocean, Letter Machine, Octopus Books. 9pm. w/Feng Sun Chen, Christopher DeWeese, Peter Gizzi, Thurston Moore, Andrea Rexilius, myself, and Jenny Zhang. The Chicago Q Ensemble and Manual Cinema will reprise a version of their stage performance, FJORDS, at the Poetry Foundation a week prior. And DJ Jacob Ross will bring it all home.
Step right up. Step riiiiiiiiiight up.
